REDD+ is a UNFCCC mechanism combating climate change by reducing CO2 emissions through forest conservation and sustainable management. Since 2013, REDD+ Matavén is protecting 1,150,212 hectares of natural forests, preserving biodiversity, soils, and water in Resguardo Selva Matavén, Colombia, while improving the livelihoods of 22,486 Indigenous people.
Empowering Indigenous Leadership
Funded entirely by carbon offsets, REDD+ Matavén reinvests nearly 90% of its revenue into the community, providing access to resources like food, education, potable water, healthcare, and housing to empower Indigenous communities to continue safeguarding Matavén and fostering a future where both nature and people thrive.
The project is led by Indigenous communities who founded ACATISEMA, Matavén governance body. To achieve their vision, they sought the support of MEDIAMOS – a Colombian consulting firm with 25+ years of experience – forming a strategic alliance to launch the Project in 2013. As project proponents and developers, MEDIAMOS provided initial funding and technical expertise, while Indigenous leadership contributed ancestral knowledge, balancing modern sustainability practices with traditional stewardship.
Global Standards & Certification
Certified under the Verra Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) and Climate, Community, and Biodiversity (CCB) standards (2013–2042), REDD+ Matavén delivers high-integrity carbon credits aligned with international environmental and social responsibility standards.
Strategic Importance
Located at the transition zone between the Orinoquía savannas and the Colombian Amazon rainforest, Matavén is a unique ecological mosaic that safeguards the Amazon. As Colombia’s last well-preserved transition region, it is protected by REDD+ Matavén, shielding it from threats like mining, hydrocarbons, and illegal activities.
