Natural capital is the world’s stock of natural assets: rocks, ores & other minerals, soil, air, water and all living things. Bloomsbury Natural Capital (BNC) is a for-profit company set up to invest in commercial companies which also sequester carbon and boost biodiversity.

Chairman: Peter Hollands; Directors: Martin Hollands and Barbara Sotowicz; Advisor IT and data: Simon Benney.

Investments are made at Seed Capital & Series A stages. BNC usually takes up to 5% of a company’s equity in an initial investment, potentially raised to 10%-25% in subsequent funding rounds. Projects with pre-money values between £2.5M-£15M are the main targets.

BNC owns 3% of the equity of Cascadia Seaweed of Canada. Martin Hollands is a Senior Advisor to their Board on Ecosystem Services & Restorative Aquaculture. Cascadia farms seaweed; its Plant Health Division sells liquid seaweed extracts; bio-stimulant sales have begun: trial use of cattle feed supplements (reducing methane emissions) by its Animal Health Division are under way. Cascadia also provides ecosystem services in Canada & Kenya.

BNC holds 1% of the equity in Xilva AG of Switzerland: AI-enhanced environmental screening of forest investments. The “Xilva FOREST+ PORTFOLIO” service catalogues rigorously assesses high integrity forests. The “Xilva GRADE” service provides a forest evaluation methodology for investors, project developers & corporate buyers. Martin Hollands is BNC’s Director on Xilva’s Board.

BNC’s parent company, Bloomsbury Minerals Economics, owns 26% of Skarn Associates, which researches mines’ energy sources & usage, and greenhouse gas emissions. BME holds (indirectly) 19.5% of Skarn Water, researching water stewardship in copper, gold, silver & zinc mining. BNC’s sister company Bloomsbury Information Capital (BIC) holds 4% of the equity in Minviro, which provides life cycle assessments for metals. BIC also owns 3.3% of the equity in Neo Eco: financially integrated sustainability reporting software.
